Grow cabbages in growbags – all you need to know

Cabbage is a much easy to grow vegetable which requires very low maintenance. The best time to grow cabbage is from July till November. The first step is to find good quality seed. You can either useĀ  traditional/desi seeds or hybrid seeds. The hybrid seeds are usually very expensive but they are immune to many diseases as well. The choice is yours.

First you need to germinate the seeds. You can germinate the seeds in a seedling tray or you can let the seeds sprout in a tissue paper and plant them directly in the growbags. Click here to read about sprouting a seed in a tissue paper. If you are germinating the seeds in a seedling tray, replant them to growbags once they have grown around 10 cm in height. To get bigger size cabbages we recommend growing them in our XL size bags or Large size bags. If you plant them in small bags the roots won’t grow much and the size of the cabbage will also be very small. Grow only one cabbage plant in a growbag.

It usually takes around 2 months for the cabbage to produce fruiting. Keep fertilizing your cabbage plant with vermi-compost or cow manure every 2 weeks. A handful of fertilizer should be enough for each plant. You can harvest your cabbages in around 5 months since germination. If there is pest attack on your cabbage plant, spray 5 ml neem oil diluted in 1 litre water every 2 weeks. Keep the cabbage plants in full sun for the best yield.
